Ramallah, Thursday, March 6, 2025 – As part of ongoing efforts to promote gender equality within the High Judicial Council, an open meeting was held yesterday in Ramallah in celebration of International Women’s Day. The event aimed to discuss ways to empower women and enhance their role in the judiciary.

Duha Shellah, 26 years old, is a Palestinian young doctor and medical journalist. She is the founder & CEO of the Researchist, a research community working to increase youth and women’s representation in research and science. In 2022, Duha was recognized as one of the world’s 21 outstanding young physicians by the Inter-Academy Partnership in Berlin, Germany. She is also an Eastern Mediterranean Region Delegate at World Federation of Public Health Associations (Young Council). Additionally, Duha is a coordinator at the Medical & Health Sciences division of the Palestine Academy for Science and Technology. Among other things, Duha is the Student Editor-in-Chief and Ambassador at the International Journal of Medical Students.

During two high-level workshops that brought together Palestinian Government, feminist leaders and local and international civil society members, UN representatives, the State of Palestine’s Ministry of Women’s Affairs and UN Women have launched the Country Gender Equality Profile (CGEP) to serve as a reliable source of evidence-based information and advocacy on gender equality in Palestine. JERUSALEM – UNESCO and UN Women Palestine offices signed a partnership agreement on 1 July 2021 with the aim of enhancing the role of women and promoting gender-sensitive reporting in Palestinian media.The agreement, which will last until March 2022, encompasses various activities such as conducting a gender study of major media organizations and monitoring gender presence in five major outlets in Palestine.

Mariam Shaqura, 46, is the Director of Women’s Affairs at the Red Crescent Society (RCS) in the Gaza Strip, where she has worked for 21 years. A mother of two girls, aged 13 and 8, Mrs. Shaqura talks about her experience during the recent escalation of violence on the Strip, and the damages caused to the Women’s Health Centre operated by RCS at the Jabalya Refugee Camp, one of the largest in Gaza.

The COVID-19 lockdown in Palestine left many women with no legal backing to secure child visitation and custody rights. Former partners took advantage of the legal paralysis to prevent mothers from seeing their children or to stop sending alimony.
